Where McPherson Dogs Live and Play
McPherson yards come in a few flavors. Near downtown, you'll find 1920s and 1930s bungalows on gridded streets off Main Street and Kansas Avenue. Those lots tend to be compact, with detached garages out back. A small yard fills up fast with one big dog. Trust us.
Farther out, mid-century homes have bigger front yards. There are also newer planned subdivisions from the 2000s, plus spots like The Veranda, a 55+ community. Big yard, small yard, corner lot near McPherson College. We scoop them all.
Bremyer Dog Park
Bremyer Dog Park sits at 1000 S. Centennial. It's three acres of off-leash space where dogs can run and owners can chat. It's a true community project. The city donated the land and handles the mowing. Volunteers raised the money and keep it going through donations. So pick up after your pup there. Those volunteers have earned it.
Lakeside Park
Lakeside Park covers 46 acres in the heart of town. It's one of McPherson's 14 city parks and one of its biggest. There's a paved path of about a mile around the small lakes, which makes for an easy leashed loop. You'll also pass a disc golf course, the Swan Court fountain, a garden bridge and a fishing lagoon. Bring bags. Every loop.
McPherson's Dog Rules, in Plain English
McPherson has clear rules for dog owners, and some of them surprise people.
- Your own yard counts. Under City Ordinance 10-51, dogs must be kept indoors unless they're on a leash or inside a well-built, well-kept fenced enclosure. A dog loose in an unfenced front yard is considered running at large, even on your own property.
- Running at large gets pricey. It's a Class C violation. Fines start at $50 for a first offense and climb to $500 by the fifth. The count follows the owner, not the dog.
- License every dog by January 1. Ordinance 10-42 says city licenses are due January 1 each year. You can buy one at any vet in town or at the animal shelter. Every dog in the house needs a current rabies shot first.
- Dog waste has its own section. The city code includes a section on control of dog waste (Sec. 10-50). Read the exact wording in the code, but the takeaway is simple: don't leave it behind.
Found a loose dog in city limits? The city's advice is to call McPherson County Communications at 620-245-1266. Curious how waste fines work elsewhere? Read our post on fines for not picking up dog poop.
Pet Events and Pet Places Around McPherson
The Pooch Plunge at McPherson Water Park
This one's a local favorite. Each August, after McPherson Water Park closes to people for the season, it opens the pool to dogs for the Pooch Plunge. It's been going for a few years now. Entry has been five dollars per dog, and the money goes to Bremyer Dog Park. Wet dogs, happy owners, a better dog park. Everybody wins.
McPherson Animal Shelter
The McPherson Animal Shelter is at 1115 W. Woodside. The city funds it. It opened on January 1, 2007, and can house 16 dogs at a time. It takes dogs only, from inside city limits, both strays and surrenders. Strays are held for six days so owners can claim them. Thinking about adding a dog? Start there.
Cat House McPherson
Cat House McPherson, also known as the McPherson County Humane Society, has cared for homeless animals since 1977. It's on South Elm Street. Not a dog thing, sure. But plenty of McPherson homes have both.
Why McPherson Yards Get Messy Fast
Winter is sneaky. Snow covers the yard and you stop scooping. Then it melts, and months of piles show up at once. That's why late winter is the busiest time of year for poop scooping. Rain doesn't help either. Here's the honest truth on whether dog poop washes away in the rain. Spoiler: it doesn't.
Smell hanging around after we scoop? Ask about yard sanitizing and deodorizing. With McPherson's leash and fence rules, a lot of dogs do their business in the same fenced backyard every day. Regular service keeps it from piling up.
