Where Maize Dogs Live and Play
Maize is growing fast. The city says so itself. Close to 7,000 people call it home now, and new streets keep filling in. Newer subdivisions like Fiddlers Cove at Prairie Pines sit a short drive from older ranch homes near downtown. Different houses. Same problem along the back fence.
Most Maize dogs get their exercise at home. The city's 2017 parks plan counted about 50 and a half acres of city land set aside as parkland or open space. Only about 7 acres of it were developed and open to the public back then. The Coves Parkland alone is almost 17 acres on paper. So for a lot of dogs here, your yard is the dog park. And your yard takes the hits.
Maize City Park and the Walks in Between
Maize City Park is the heart of town. It sits at 401 S. Khedive near Academy Avenue and covers 5.15 acres. You get a splash pad, playgrounds, picnic shelters and a community building you can reserve for parties. A leashed lap around the edge is a classic Maize evening.
Over at 10100 Grady Avenue, east of Maize Road and north of 37th Street, the City Hall Arboretum and Park started with tree plantings in 2015. It has a pond, parking and room to stroll. The Pracht Wetlands nearby make another nice walk.
Wherever you go, bring bags. Kids run barefoot at that splash pad all summer. Nobody wants a surprise in the grass on the way to it. See the City of Maize park page for current amenities and closures.
Maize Dog Rules, in Plain English
The Maize Police Department enforces these rules:
- Rabies shots: dogs and cats six months and older need them.
- License every year: buy your dog's city license at City Hall, 10100 Grady Ave, and bring proof of rabies vaccination. Got a new dog? You have 30 days to register it.
- Tags on: your dog wears a collar or harness with the city tag whenever it's outside the house.
- Leash rule: dogs stay on your property. Off it, they need a leash no longer than 10 feet, held by a responsible person.
- Shared spaces: under code section 2-101(ee), the common areas of a condo, townhouse or apartment complex don't count as your premises. An unleashed dog there is running at large.
- Two dogs max: Maize allows two dogs and three cats per property. Want more? Apply for an Animal Maintenance Permit at City Hall.
- Barking: persistent barking that disturbs neighbors is a public nuisance.

Why That Pond at City Hall Cares About Your Yard
Here's a detail most folks miss. The pond at City Hall Park was built to handle runoff from the land around it. Rain rolls across Maize lawns and streets, and it carries whatever it finds. Including what your dog left by the swing set.
So no, rain doesn't make the problem disappear. It just moves it. Our article on whether dog poop washes away in the rain explains why. And dog poop bacteria can hang around in your yard a lot longer than you'd think.
Late winter is the other big one. When the snow melts, you find every pile since December. All at once. We know dog poop. Unfortunately.

What Poo Squad Costs in Maize

Fall Festival, Arbor Day and Other Maize Traditions
Maize knows how to gather. The Maize Fall Festival fills Maize City Park each September. It kicks off with a parade, then rolls into a vendor fair, inflatables, face painting, a petting zoo and live music. Big crowds and a petting zoo? Many pups are happier at home that day. If yours tags along, keep that leash short.
Each April, the Maize Tree Board hosts an Arbor Day celebration with tree planting. April also brings the City Wide Garage Sale Day. In summer the city runs a Summer Concert Series, and the Farm and Art Market is another reason to wander downtown.
One pet place every Maize owner should know: the Wichita Animal Shelter. When Maize police pick up a loose dog, that's where it goes. If your dog ever slips the gate, start your search there. (And keep that city tag on the collar.)
