Where Derby's Dogs Live and Play

Derby takes its parks seriously. The city's parks staff manages more than 500 acres of parkland, with 20 developed parks and 14 green spaces. That's a lot of room for dogs. And a lot of room for dogs to leave things behind.

The big one for dog people is Decarsky Dog Park at 1600 Line Drive, off south Rock Road. It opened in 2020 and has an agility course, separate yards for small and large dogs, a dog pond with a dock, water bubblers and a wash station. It's open sunrise to sunset. The city says a second phase of Decarsky Park is under construction too.

Other favorites around town:

  • High Park on the east side, with its fishing pond, amphitheater and the July 4 fireworks crowd.
  • Madison Avenue Central Park, with walking paths and the Kansas Grown Farmers Market from April to October.
  • Warren Riverview Park on the west side, right on the Arkansas River.

Derby Neighborhoods We Hear From

Then there's home base. We hear from dog owners all over Derby, in neighborhoods like Spring Ridge, Rainbow Valley, The Oaks, Stone Creek, Brookwood and Southwind. Different streets, same problem in the backyard. If you live in one with an HOA, our guide to HOA dog rules is worth a skim.

Derby's Poop Rules, in Plain English

Derby has a pet waste law, and it's pretty simple. Section 6.04.180 of the Derby Municipal Code says whoever's in control of an animal has to pick up its waste on public property, public rights of way and anyone else's private property. The city's Animal Waste page points to Ordinance 2165 for the same rule.

What that means for you:

  • Bag it at Decarsky, High Park and every sidewalk in between.
  • Your neighbor's lawn is not a free zone. Letting your dog go there is against the code.
  • If your dog was running loose when it happened, the code treats that as evidence you allowed it. Dogs and cats aren't allowed to run at large in Derby anyway.
  • Service animals working with a person who has a physical or visual disability are an exception.

Pet Limits and Licenses in Derby

A few more Derby rules dog owners ask about. Each household can keep up to six dogs or six cats, and no more than eight dogs and cats combined (six months and older). Dogs and cats need a city license and a current rabies shot. The Derby pet license runs $10, or $15 if your pet isn't spayed or neutered, and local vets hand out the tags.

Your own backyard is your call under the code. But the city points out that pet waste can carry diseases and parasites that spread to other pets and people. That's reason enough not to let it pile up. Want the details? Read our post on bacteria in dog poop.

Pool Parties and Lost Pets in Derby

Derby's dogs get their own day at the water park. Rock River Rapids, the city's aquatic park on East James Street, has hosted a Pooch Pool Party to close out the summer swim season. Dogs take over the pool for one last splash before it shuts down for the year. If your pup loves water, watch for it near the end of summer.

If your dog ever slips out, here's a Derby detail worth knowing. Animal Control takes pets picked up in the city limits to the Wichita Animal Shelter at 3303 N. Hillside if the owner can't be found that day. A current license tag is the quickest way home. Licensing questions go to Derby City Hall at 316-788-1519.
