Why Urbana Yards Need a Little Backup

Urbana is a town of big old trees and busy people. In West Urbana, mature trees form a canopy over narrow streets, and some streets still have restored brick. It's gorgeous. It also means a thick layer of leaves every fall, and leaves are great at hiding what your dog left behind.

Then there's the schedule. Classes, work, kids, the bike ride to campus. Scooping slides to the bottom of the list. A week turns into three. Suddenly the whole yard is a no go zone.

That's where we come in. Your local Poo Squad crew shows up, walks the yard, scoops every pile and hauls it away. You don't have to touch a bag.

Where Urbana's Dogs Live and Play

We see dogs in every corner of Urbana. A few of the neighborhoods we think about most:

  • West Urbana, between the University of Illinois and downtown. The American Planning Association named it a Great Neighborhood in 2007. Lots of walkers, lots of dogs, lots of shade.
  • Southeast Urbana, with its mix of 1960s and newer homes near Meadowbrook Park.
  • Fairlawn Park, with mid century homes close to Blair Park and Carle Park.
  • Historic East Urbana, with 19th century houses near downtown and the community garden at Victory Park.
  • King Park, a residential area with a namesake park honoring Dr. King.

Meadowbrook, Carle Park and the leash walk loop

Meadowbrook Park is the big one. Its 2.7 mile loop trail winds past prairie and the Wandell Sculpture Garden, and it's one of the most popular leashed dog walks in town. Carle Park, the 11 acre park on West Indiana Avenue, is a West Urbana favorite with its Lincoln sculpture. Crystal Lake Park, the Boneyard Greenway and the Kickapoo Rail Trail out toward St. Joseph round out the list.

The Urbana Dog Park on Perkins Road

Want your dog off leash? Head to the Urbana Dog Park at 1501 E. Perkins Road. It opened in 2003, about five years before Champaign's Bark District. It's fenced, members only, and has a separate small dog area, rinse stations, benches and seasonal drinking water. Kids under 6 can't come in. It's also heavily shaded by mature trees, which your dog will appreciate in July.

Pro tip from locals: it gets busy just before 8 a.m. and just after 5 p.m. If you're a Champaign Bark District member, the two park districts let you add an Urbana Dog Park gate fob for $10.

Urbana's Dog Rules, in Plain English

Nobody reads municipal code for fun. So here's the short version.

  • Leash up off your property. Urbana's leash ordinance bars dogs from running at large anywhere but the owner's property unless they're leashed.
  • Visible restraint at home. On your own premises, Urbana expects a fence, chain, leash or other visible restraint. A local attorney writing in The News-Gazette pointed out that invisible electric fences arguably don't count.
  • Leashes in every park but one. Urbana Park District rules require dogs on a leash and under the owner's control in district parks. The Perkins Road dog park is the only place your dog can run free.
  • Vaccinate and register. Every dog and cat in the city needs a rabies shot by four months old, then registration through your vet or the city.
  • Sanitation counts. Urbana Animal Control enforces Chapter 4 of the Urbana City Code, and animal sanitation is on its list, right next to barking and at large complaints.
