You know the walk. Out the back door, eyes glued to the grass, stepping like the lawn is a minefield. Because it kind of is. We know dog poop. Unfortunately. So let us take that walk for you.

Why Schertz Is an Easy Drive for Us

Schertz sits between San Antonio and New Braunfels along Interstate 35. That's a short hop for a pet waste removal New Braunfels crew. We already work Cibolo, Selma, Universal City and Garden Ridge, so Schertz fits right in the middle.

New home communities keep going up, like Carmel Ranch and The Parklands. New homes. New dogs. New piles. Schertz even made Money Magazine's list of Best Places to Live, which is great news for families and slightly worse news for anyone scooping a two dog yard by hand.

Where Schertz Dogs Live: Northcliffe to The Crossvine

We hear the same neighborhood names over and over. Northcliffe. Ashley Place. The Crossvine, Kensington Ranch, Parklands, Woodland Oaks, Scenic Hills and Rhine Valley. Lots of fenced yards. Lots of dogs who treat them as a personal bathroom.

Many of these subdivisions have a homeowners association. The city keeps an HOA list that includes Ashley Place, The Crossvine and Northcliffe. If your HOA cares about how yards look and smell, a scooped lawn keeps you off the violation letter list. Our guide to HOA dog rules covers what associations usually ask of pet owners.

Here's how our dog poop removal service works in Schertz. We come on a set schedule, walk the whole yard, bag every pile and haul it away. You don't touch a thing.

Where Schertz Dogs Play

Schertz has more than 30 parks, athletic fields and rec facilities. Dog owners tend to end up in a couple of favorites.

  • Schertz Dog Park, 940 Community Circle Drive. It's fully fenced and friendly to small dogs, with drinking water, chairs and a table. Listed hours run 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
  • Pickrell Park, 701 Oak Street. This 17 acre community park has a walking trail, playscapes, picnic pavilions and an outdoor pool. It also hosts a lot of the city's events and festivals.
  • Ashley Park, where the city has hosted summer evening events like Glow in the Park.

Pack bags for the park. Then come home to a yard that's already been handled. That's the whole idea.

Schertz Animal Rules in Plain English

Schertz keeps its animal rules in Chapter 14 of the city code, titled Animal Control. It covers restraints, bites and animal care, plus microchipping and permits. Schertz Animal Services, part of the Police Department, enforces that ordinance along with Texas animal laws.

A few things worth knowing:

  • License your dog. Once your pet gets a rabies shot, the city asks you to bring the rabies certificate to Schertz Animal Services for a city license.
  • Clean up at city events. At Paws in the Pool, the city requires owners to clean up after their dogs and keep them leashed outside the pool area.
  • Keep the street clean. City street sweepers cover about 163 miles of road each month. The city asks residents not to blow or sweep yard waste into the street. Same logic goes for poop. Don't hose it toward the curb.

Think rain takes care of it? It doesn't. Here's what really happens to dog poop in the rain. If your HOA or a neighbor has opinions, this rundown on poop fines is worth a read.

Paws in the Pool and Other Schertz Pet Traditions

Here's our favorite local tradition. Each September, right as Pickrell Park Pool wraps its summer season, Schertz opens the pool to dogs for Paws in the Pool. Small dogs get the wading pool. Big dogs get the main pool. Owners show proof of up to date rabies shots, and spots are limited, so people register ahead.

The city has also thrown dog park parties during Parks and Recreation Month in July. In 2022 that meant a Pupsicle Party at the Schertz Dog Park.

Planning your own dog friendly event? Our event pooper scooper services keep the lawn clean while everyone else has fun. Running an apartment complex or HOA common area in Schertz? Ask about commercial pet waste removal.

The Schertz Animal Adoption Center

Just down Community Circle from the dog park sits the Schertz Animal Adoption Center, at 800 Community Circle Drive. Animal Services shelters strays, runs the city's adoption program and investigates cruelty and neglect. The center opens Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It closes the first Monday of each month for staff training.

Fun fact: the shelter's volunteer duties include cleaning animal waste from the yards. So if you've ever wanted to practice before adopting, there you go. Just adopted? Congrats. Your yard is about to find out.
