Where Round Rock's Dogs Live and Play
Round Rock covers a lot of ground, and every corner has its own dog crowd. Teravista has its 18-hole golf course and plenty of family yards. Forest Creek, in the southeastern part of town, is a master-planned community of around 1,200 homes with rolling hills and mature landscaping. Brushy Creek is an established neighborhood that sits between Round Rock and Cedar Park.
Different streets, same problem. Dogs poop. Every day. Usually right where you were about to mow.
When your dog needs more room than the backyard, the city has plenty. Round Rock has 37 developed parks spanning more than 2,305 acres. Old Settlers Park is the big one, with about 640 acres of rolling countryside that hosts local events and festivals.
The Round Rock Dog Depot
This is the city's leash-free spot. The Round Rock Dog Depot is a fenced 1.85 acre park at 800 Deerfoot Drive, tucked behind Lake Creek Pool. It has a large dog area, a small dog area for pups under 40 pounds, and a rotation area that gives the grass time to grow back. Agility fans will find a tire jump, an A-frame ramp and a tunnel.
A few things to know before you go:
- All dogs must be vaccinated and microchipped.
- No food inside, and that includes dog treats.
- Hours run 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. from April 1 to October 1, and 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. the rest of the year.
- The city asks you to use the dog waste receptacles provided. Please do.

Brushy Creek Trail and Rabb Park
Rabb Park sits on 15.89 acres along Brushy Creek and is home to the Play for All Abilities Park. It's also part of the Brushy Creek Trail System, so it's a popular starting point for a long, leashed walk by the water.
Round Rock's Poop and Leash Rules, in Plain English
Round Rock spells this out in Chapter 8 of its city code. Here's what it means for you.
- Pick it up, every time (Sec. 8-137). Your dog can't leave poop on public property, streets, sidewalks, play areas, HOA common grounds or anyone else's yard unless you pick it up right away. The code says to bag it and carry it back to your own property for disposal.
- Leash up in public (Sec. 8-204). Dogs on streets, sidewalks, park paths and other public spaces need a leash. It can be up to 25 feet long in a public park and no longer than six feet anywhere else. The fenced area of a designated leash-free dog park is the exception.
- Keep them contained at home. The city's Animal Control FAQ sums it up: dogs stay in a fenced yard, tied out, or on a leash at all times.
Chapter 8 also has a section, 8-138, on keeping private property sanitary. Translation: your own backyard counts too. If your HOA has its own pet rules on top of the city's, our guide to HOA dog rules is worth a read.
Why Brushy Creek Cares Where the Poop Goes
Round Rock is a creek town. That matters more than you'd think.
The Brushy Creek Municipal Utility District puts pet waste stations throughout its parks and greenbelts for a reason. Rain and sprinkler water can wash pet waste into storm drains. Those drains don't go to a treatment plant. They run straight to local creeks and rivers. The district names pet waste left on the ground as one of the leading sources of fecal bacteria in our waterways.
So the pile you skip in the back corner doesn't just disappear. Curious how that plays out? Read whether dog poop washes away in the rain. Spoiler: not the way you'd hope.
