Why Clifton Is Its Own Kind of Dog Town
Clifton isn't a city. It's an unincorporated community run by Mesa County, sitting right up against Grand Junction to the west and Fruitvale to the northwest. It's also big. The 2020 census counted 20,413 people in the Clifton CDP. That's a lot of backyards. And a lot of dogs.
The name comes from the cliffs near the original town site. Folks still talk about "Old Clifton," the part of town Mesa County kept its own planning section for. Then there are the newer pockets that keep filling in. Wherever you live here, a clean yard works the same way. Somebody has to scoop it. We'd like that somebody to be us.
Where Clifton's Dogs Live and Play
Clifton has a mix of single family subdivisions, townhomes and condos. Dogs live all over town, in neighborhoods like these:
- Peachwood Subdivision, a family area close to schools
- Kimwood Estates, with bigger lots (and bigger poop hunts)
- Candlewood Estates, close to parks and everyday errands
- Fox Hollow I and II, established streets with mature landscaping
- Copper Canyon, one of the newer developments
Mature landscaping is lovely. It's also great at hiding piles. Bigger lots mean more ground for your dog to "decorate." Either way, that's the kind of yard where a pro scoop pays off.
Rocky Mountain Elementary Park and the Clifton Community Campus
If you walk your dog in Clifton, you've probably done laps at Rocky Mountain Elementary Park. It sits at 474 32½ Road and covers 16 acres. There's a looped trail, a playground and a picnic shelter. Parking is street side only, so plan on a short walk in.
The park sits next to the Clifton Community Center campus on D½ Road. The center opened on June 22, 2024, with a gym, child care and meeting space. The Clifton branch of Mesa County Libraries shares the campus. Lots of kids. Lots of strollers. That's exactly why picking up after your dog here matters. Nobody wants a sneaker full of surprise.

The Clifton Nature Park Stretch of the Riverfront Trail
Want a longer walk? The Clifton Nature Park section of the Colorado Riverfront Trail runs from 33½ Road out to Corn Lake. It's 5.3 miles round trip. You get river views, ponds, wetlands and benches for bird watching. Most of it borders state land, so there are barely any roads to cross.
It's a pretty place. Let's keep it that way. Bring bags, keep your pup leashed, and pack out what they leave. The river is right there.
Clifton's Dog Rules Come From Mesa County
Because Clifton is unincorporated, there's no town code to look up. Mesa County's rules apply. The current county animal resolution, Resolution 2024-44, took effect January 1, 2025. Here's the plain English version:
- Leash it. In public areas, your dog has to be on a leash 10 feet long or shorter.
- Pick it up. Mesa County says laws and common courtesy require you to remove any poop your dog leaves in parks and public areas.
- Know who to call. Since January 2025, the Mesa County Sheriff's Office handles animal control in unincorporated areas like Clifton. For non-emergency animal issues, the county points you to dispatch at (970) 242-6707.
Need off-leash time? Mesa County notes that Grand Junction has two fenced dog parks, at Canyon View Park and Las Colonias Park. Some BLM land allows dogs off leash under voice control. Check with the BLM first. You can read the county's parks and leash area rules for the details. Our guide to fines for not picking up dog poop covers the bigger picture.
Adoption Events and Pet Places Near Clifton
Mesa County Animal Services runs the county shelter and pet licensing. They hold adoption specials through the year. Around Halloween, they've run the "Pupkin Patch," a weekend of discounted adoptions. They've also done summer specials and joined the Clear the Shelters push in late summer.
Thinking of adding a second dog from one of those events? Congrats. Your yard just doubled its output. We can help with that part.

Why Clifton Yards Shouldn't Wait
Dog poop isn't fertilizer. It doesn't "just go away" either. It sits, it stinks and it draws flies. It can carry bacteria and parasites that linger in the soil long after the pile's gone. Kids and other pets track it everywhere.
