Topeka Crew, Holton Yards
Holton sits about 28 miles north of Topeka on US 75. It's four lanes the whole way, which makes the drive easy for us. Our crew is based in the Topeka area. Holton is part of a service area that also covers Silver Lake, Hoyt, Mayetta, Meriden and Auburn.
So if you searched for a pooper scooper service in Topeka, KS and you live in Holton, you're in the right spot. Same crew. Same buckets. Your yard just happens to be a little farther up the highway.
We do one thing here: residential dog poop removal. We walk the yard, find every pile and haul it off. You know that feeling of mowing over a surprise? That stops.
Where Holton Dogs Live and Play
Holton is the Jackson County seat, a town of about 3,300 people. The city describes brick streets lined with old trees and turn-of-the-century homes with big porches. Near the center, around the courthouse square, you'll find Victorian, Craftsman and Foursquare houses. Farther out, it's mostly ranch homes and cottages with attached garages.
Those mature trees are great for shade. They're less great in the fall, when a layer of leaves hides every landmine in the yard. We know dog poop. Unfortunately. We find it anyway.
Dogwood Park at Countryside Park
Holton's dog park is Dogwood Park, inside Countryside Park. The city says it was paid for entirely by a donation from the Judy Hann Estate. It has separate areas for large and small dogs, plus toys for the dogs to play on. One rule to remember: your dog stays leashed until you're inside the dog park itself.
Rafter's Park, Linscott Park and Elkhorn Lake
Rafter's Park is the big one in town. It has a pickleball court, ball fields, the municipal pool and fishing at Elkhorn Lake. Linscott Park has tennis and basketball courts and a playground. Walking your dog over there? Bring bags. Lots of them.
Banner Creek Reservoir
Banner Creek Reservoir sits about a mile west of town. Jackson County runs it, and it covers 550 acres of water. The Banner Creek Hike and Bike Trail runs 13.8 miles through native grass, woods and little footbridges. It's a long day out for a dog. And a long day of pickup for you.
Holton's Animal Rules, in Plain English
Here's what we could confirm about keeping animals in Holton.
- Leash up at Dogwood Park. Dogs stay on a leash until they're inside the fenced dog park.
- No farm animals in town. In 2021, Holton police reminded residents that chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, pigeons, goats, horses, cattle, hogs and sheep aren't allowed inside city limits.
- A breed rule. That same 2021 reminder mentioned a city ordinance restricting pit bull type dogs. Rules change, so check with the city before you bring one home.
We didn't find a Holton pickup ordinance posted online, so we won't make one up. Common courtesy covers it anyway: pick up after your dog on walks and in your own yard. Wet Springs Are Rough on Holton Yards
Holton knows wet springs. In April 2019, the city had to close Dogwood Park because conditions were extremely wet. It reopened on April 15 that year once things dried out.
When it's too wet for the dog park, your backyard is soggy too. And no, rain doesn't make the problem go away. It just breaks piles down into the soil and spreads them around. Our post on whether dog poop washes away in the rain explains why.
Late winter is the other rough patch. Piles stack up while nobody wants to go outside. Then the first warm week shows you everything at once. That's a great time for a one-time dog poop cleanup. And with Banner Creek and Elkhorn Lake so close, keeping waste out of the runoff is worth it. See dog poop's environmental impact for the details.

Pet Places Around Holton
Thinking about adding a dog? Heart of Jackson Humane Society is right in town at 414 East 8th Street. The Kansas Department of Agriculture lists it as a licensed animal shelter in Jackson County. The same list includes Pawd'ners Rescue Ranch and Hospice down in Hoyt, another town we serve. Check their hours before you head over.
Fair warning: a new dog means a new pile schedule. We're happy to help with that part.
