You let the dog out. You meant to scoop. Then life happened, and now the backyard is a minefield. We get it. We know dog poop. Unfortunately. That's why we exist.
Seven Miles From Manhattan, Right Next Door
St. George sits seven miles east of Manhattan in Pottawatomie County. That's a short hop for us. Our pooper scooper service from Manhattan, KS covers St. George just like it covers our own streets.
This isn't the sleepy town it used to be, either. St. George had about 211 people in 1920. The 2020 census counted 1,054. The median age here is 31.6, younger than the state as a whole. Young households, new houses, lots of yards. And in our experience, lots of dogs.
St. George is about 20 minutes from Manhattan, Wamego and Fort Riley, so plenty of folks here commute. That's a drive on both ends of the day. Scooping the yard in the dark shouldn't be one more chore on the list.
Where St. George Dogs Live and Play
The city describes itself as a historic downtown ringed by residential neighborhoods. It's a small footprint. Black Jack Creek forms the west edge of town, and Blood Creek runs along the east. Most of what's in between is houses, yards and the dogs who patrol them.
Just outside town, the newer Scenic Woods Subdivision offers lots from about 1.75 to 2.76 acres. Big lots are great for dogs. They're less great when you're hunting for piles across two acres of grass. That's where we come in.
Good spots for a walk with your pup:
- Black Jack Spring, near Lincoln Avenue and 3rd Street on the east side of Lincoln. It's a spring basin dedicated to the town's early settlers, and a nice stop on a loop through town.
- Boggs Landing Boat Ramp, St. George's access point to the Kansas River. Paddlers love it. So do dogs who love water.
- The town park. St. George has one local park and a community center, so you'll see neighbors (and their dogs) there often.
Bag it and bin it on those walks. Your neighbors will thank you. Then let us handle the yard back home.
Two Creeks, One River and Your Backyard
Here's the thing about St. George. Water is everywhere. You've got Black Jack Creek on one side, Blood Creek on the other, and the Kaw just south of town. Poop left in the yard doesn't just sit there forever. When it rains, it breaks down and the runoff moves. Want the honest science? Read does dog poop wash away in the rain.
Winter adds another twist. Snow piles up and hides everything for weeks. Then a warm stretch between January and March melts it, and surprise. There's the whole season, all at once. If that's your yard right now, book a one time cleanup in St. George and we'll reset it. No judgment. We've seen worse. Probably.
St. George's Dog Rules, in Plain English
The City of St. George adopted its current city code on February 8, 2018. Animal rules live in Chapter 6, Animals, on the city's Municode library. We'd rather not guess at the exact wording, so give it a read yourself. Questions? Call the city office at (785) 494-2558. It's at 220 First Street.
Pottawatomie County handles rabies control. If an animal bites someone, the county can order quarantine or testing. Here's the part owners should know: for owned animals, the cost of capture, quarantine and testing is the owner's responsibility. Keep those rabies shots current. To report a bite, call the Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office at 785-457-3481, or 911 in an emergency.
Wondering about poop and the law in general? Our guide on whether it's illegal to not pick up dog poop covers the basics. The short version: pick it up. Always.
